Soekarno-Hatta International Airport or Soekarno Hatta International Airport (SHIA) is the largest and major airport of Indonesia. Administratively the airport is located in the city of Tangerang, Banten. The airport is actually only about 20 kilometers miles west of the capital, DKI Jakarta.
Soekarno-Hatta Airport was first operated in 1985, replacing the function of the old Airport in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta which is now out of operation and Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport, in East Jakarta.
Since then, Kemayoran Airport has been converted into a public area. Meanwhile, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport is still operated to serve special flights (charter), VVIP launching, pilgrim flights, and military flights. Since January 2014, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport has been re-functioned for commercial domestic flight destination to help Soekarno-Hatta Airport.
In 1991, Soekarno Hatta Airport opened terminal 2, then Terminal 3 was built in 2009. The development of commercial aviation in Indonesia is very rapid, as evidenced by the number of passengers in SHIA which reached 43.7 million passengers in 2010, The 3 terminals at SHIA are only capable of accommodating 38 million passengers. Then, in 2012, Soekarno-Hatta Airport becomes one of the 9 busiest airports in the world with a total passenger of 57.8 million, 12.1% larger than in 2011. The latest peak is in May 2014, SHIA accommodates 62 passengers, 1 million passengers making it the busiest airport in the southern hemisphere. Although it accommodates passengers exceeding capacity, but by 2012 Soekarno-Hatta Airport has been declared safe operation by the International Airport Council (ACI).
Airport Facilities
Soekarno-hatta Airport has facilities including aircraft maintenance facilities, supported by GMF AeroAsia (Garuda Maintenance Facility) which is located on 480,000 square meters of land, consists of a built-up structure, which includes three hangars, warehouse spare parts, workshops, building utilities , chemical outlets, test machine cells, and management offices. GMF AeroAsia has aprons capable of accommodating up to 50 aircraft, taxiways, a run-up bay and a waste treatment area standing on an area of 1.15 hectares.
In addition, Soekarno-Hatta Airport has complementary facilities such as Golf course, Airport Hotel, Lounge, Shopping area, Reading corner, Free Wifi, Smoking area.
Airport Transportation
Soekarno-hatta Airport provides several airport shuttle transportation options such as local airport shuttles, buses and taxis. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has provided free bus for passenger shuttle connecting to all terminals at Soekarno-Hatta Airport. While the inter-terminal railway has been built in 2013 and is planned to begin operation in 2015.
For transportation out of the Airport, a shuttle bus has been provided to travel from the airport to the Gambir train station in central Jakarta. Airport Shuttle buses also serve routes to the following places:

In addition, in July 2011, PT KAI has been tasked to build a commuter line
train to connect Manggarai Station and Soekarno-Hatta Airport through
Tangerang. The train is scheduled to cross Manggarai Station, Sudirman, Tanah
Abang, Duri, Grogol, Bojong Indah, Kalideres, Tanah Tinggi and Soekarno-Hatta
International Airport. Trains are planned to enter through the back of the
airport via the M1 gate before entering the airport. As a follow up, since
early October 2014, the M1 gate has been closed to facilitate the project. The
station will be placed between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
